Lejos Slow to Start Program

When I start a program, it delays for a few seconds with the hour glass icon. However, I am trying to use this for a timed robotics competition and I will need every second I can get. Is there a way I can speed up the start of the program?

Why not start your program ahead of time, if you need multiple parts for different steps in the competition write a menu program that lets you choose which sub program to run and then call that.
