Need Help - New to leJOS and doing serial communication between pc and ev3 by usb

Postby Sacul360 » Wed Nov 29, 2017 10:33 am

Hi everyone,

I used to use ev3 with preinstalled OS but never with leJos before. I moved to leJos to be able to benefit the full power of the brick.

In this view I'd like to use leJos so as to link the computer and ev3 with a serial port communication. I found some information on http://www.lejos.org/nxt/nxj/tutorial/Communications/Communications.htm, but then realise that it applies to leJos NXT only. For ev3, none of the classes match.
With further searches, I then found classes to establish communication through bluetooth or wifi, but nothing about usb.
Does it mean that usb communication has disapeared ? Why ? In this case what can I do to overcome this and use usb communication ?

Thank you!

Hi,

The EV3 supports networking over WiFi, Bluetooth and USB. It works totally different from the NXT. I advise you to read this article to get you started.

Hello Aswin,

Thanks for that but unfortunatly it doesn't say much at all on methods and classes to use in a leJOS project when USB connection is in use. Where can I find this ?

You don't need any special classes. Once you have your EV3 connect via USB then it shows up as a network device and you simply use the standard Java networking classes. You use exactly the same methods to talk to the EV3 over Bluetooth/USB and WiFi.

Having said that I would strongly recommend that you do not use USB unless you really have to. Using Bluetooth, or even better WiFi is often much easier especially with a mobile robot. Can I suggest that you describe what it is you want to do with the EV3 (what sort of programs, what sort of robot), forget about the details of connections etc. any limitations (like is this in a school environment, what sort of PC will you be using etc.) we can then advise you on the best way to do things.
