I have a NXT 2.0 brick which I didn't use for a year. When I then tried to turn it on there was no response from it whatsoever; no sounds or anything on the display. That was two years ago.
I've just tried it again with normal batteries and the rechargeable battery, but still no response.
I am assuming it is unrecoverable but is there anything I can try before I give up on it completely?

Doesn't sound good! I assume you have tried pressing the reset button (holding it down) to see if it enters programming mode (clicking). Might be worth plugging it in to a PC to see if it is recognised (speaker may be bust and it may be in update mode?). Take it apart and check to see if the wiring looks ok? Contact LEGO (you never know!).
