Mobile Robot computer science project

Hi I am a computer science student trying to debug my final year Project. I've been trying to develop a mobile robot to behave as a surveillance system which detects an intruder in a room by tracing its movement using the ultrasonic sensor.

I was wondering what’s the method (using java) to get the ultrasonic sensor (in leJOS) to react to moving objects or to follow moving objects?

The ultrasonic sensor just detects distance so using it to track someone would be hard. It you just wanted to detect them you could use it but to acurately track them I would sugest using the i-command vision package with a webcam or camrea as it has a motion sensor part.

Yah, it would be hard, but I think it would be a cool idea.

you could have the ultrasonic sensor on a rotating axle so that it could look around the room. Then have it sweep back and forth checking for any change of the distance reading. When a change is found have the program have the ui sensor start following it.
