NXT to PC and back

My apologies if the question sounds a bit silly, but

has anyone tried using the NXT to send data on the fly back to the computer?
I need to know if the NXT is able to sent data back to the pc while it is still working and possibly receive data back.

Yes this is a pretty standard mode of operation. many robots built using the nxt operate with a bi-level architecture. The nxt does "local processing", so sensor reading, motor control, simple navigation etc. It also sends data back to a pc (location, sensor readings etc). The PC performs more complex analysis of the data and may handle things like map building user interaction etc. As a result of this it then sends back data (goals, targets etc.), to the nxt to instruct it....
